White insulating blocks are manufactured from aerated concrete (AAC) in kilns. They are made from lime, sand, and cement, with the addition of aluminum powder, a foaming agent that aerates the concrete. The partially cured concrete is then autoclaved to complete the curing process and promote crystalline structure formation. The low density (approximately one-quarter that of standard reinforced concrete) and aeration allow the blocks to be easily cut, drilled, and shaped by hand. The blocks are then bonded together to form solid structural walls with excellent thermal and acoustic properties.
